So who is Generation Y exactly? There are some varying definitions. This is because it is difficult to properly assess a generation when they are still defining themselves and making a mark on the world. Strictly speaking, in biology, a generation is usually defined by a period of time that matches the average time it takes an organism to reach sexual maturity. Approximately 15 years for Humans. As such the Baby Boomers and Generation X are around the 15 year mark. At this stage most researchers have defined Gen Y at about the same length. I believe that as time goes on they will be re-defined and will span a much shorter time period. The rate of social and technological change in the past 20 years will make it so, because defining a generation should have nothing to do with years and everything to do with the underlying character traits of a group of people based on the social, environmental and technological influences on them as they formed their views on the world. I would argue that what formed my views, (born 1980) are actually very different to what are forming the views of 12 and 13 year olds around Australia right now, even though technically speaking they are Generation Y as well.
